Like most people my age, I have an unhealthy dependence on all forms of media (Instagram, YouTube, online news sites, etc.). Realizing that this was a problem in my life, I decided to make it a goal that I would abstain from media for two whole weeks. I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this challenge, but boy did I quickly learn.
I have a problem. No, I’m not referring to my obsession with documentaries about the morbidly obese or the happiness that I derive from making muffins late at night (although those may be connected and could undoubtedly use a blog post to dissect). Rather, I am referring to the unbelievably fast way in which I say “no.”
A new year (birth year, that is) means a new set of goals. Last year I decided to move away from setting a goal for every year of my life in favor of fifteen more manageable goals. To be honest, these goals did not excite me. I wrote them in a haze of uncreativity last year when I was having difficulty finding something to write about, and I struggled to feel excited about many of them.
In the words of Sia, “I’m aliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiivvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!” I know that I’ve been M.I.A. for quite some time, but I’ve committed to getting back into blogging. To show how committed I’ve become, I’m planning on publishing a few posts within a few days. Yes, you heard me right; I will be posting more than once per month! But before I get into the swing of things, I want to wrap up my goals from my year as a twenty-two-year-old.
It has been over a month since I posted about the end to my 21-goals, and I knew that I could no longer put off sharing what my 22-year-old goals are going to be. In the past (the one year I did goals), I made a goal for each year of my life, but I decided to discontinue this practice for this coming year. Instead of making twenty-two goals, I wanted to make fifteen goals towards which I could devote greater effort. So without any further ado, here is my new set of goals:
In case you were not able to deduce what this post is going to be about from the title, it is about me building a desk. When I made plans to move back home after college, I wanted to set up a home office that would serve as an engine room to my productivity. I had a specific idea as to how I wanted it to look, and I began to scour the internet for a desk in the industrial style that I wanted. I originally searched for the desk on websites such as IKEA and Amazon, but after reading the book Cheap (a book that completely changed my life and inspired a goal that I will be sharing in a few months), I knew that I could not buy a cheaply produced desk from those websites in good conscience.
Two days ago I reached the end of my month-long positivity challenge. I am happy to announce that I am now a perfectly positive, well-adjusted person *I write with gritted teeth and a plastic smile*. Ok, so I am not a paragon of positivity, but this month has been quite impactful on me and has begun changing my perspective of the world.
I am going to be positive for the entire month of March. That is such a simple statement to write, but the thought of actually applying it to my life is positively (pun partially intended) terrifying. Most people who know me will attest to the fact that I am not the friend who sees the glass as being half full. Instead, I tend to think of the glass as being broken, with the water gushing out over the shards of glass. This negative mindset that I have so often is quite honestly terrible, and I am going to use the next 31 days as a jumpstart into what I hope will be a life of more positivity.
Vegan! Yes, after much consideration, I have decided that veganism will be the stringent diet that I am going to follow for thirty days. This goal is very exciting to me, because I have been wanting to push myself to try a radical departure from my typical diet, and I believe that a veganism is about as radical as I could get (aside from attempting a breatharian diet).
I know that it is a little late to be doing this, but I am going to make some changes to the 21 goals that I came up with a few months ago. I had distinct reasons for each goal that I set when I first wrote them, and as I have thought them through and begun working through them, I have come to the conclusion that some of them need to be changed.
